People
may come forward during any service to state that they want to
be baptized and become a member of the church. If you
have been baptized before, you do not have to be baptized
again. If you have never been baptized, you prepare for
baptism through meetings with the pastor. Youth
candidates for baptism complete a program called "Bridges
of Promise."
Typically,
we hold baptismal services once a year at Carver Lake Park,
and periodically within our sanctuary. When the services
are at Carver Lake, we gather as a congregation for a service in the
picnic shelter at the park, where we worship and the
candidates for baptism are introduced by their families.
Following the service, we make our way down to Carver Lake for
the baptism itself.
During
one of the most memorable baptisms, a big thunderstorm
occurred during the worship service and left us wondering if a
baptism would happen. The storm cleared just minutes
before the end of the service, leaving us with calm and a
beautiful blue sky. As we approached the lake, a dove
flew low all the way across the lake. Those who
witnessed it will never forget it.
